How Knowing Your Skin Type Can Help You Take Charge of Your Life

Your skin is the largest organ in your body, making up 16% of your physical weight. It serves to protect you from external dangers, lets you feel sensation, and regulates your body temperature. So, why is it important that you know your skin type?

A common mistake that we make when using skin care products is using products that aren't meant for us. Knowing your skin type helps you take charge of your skin routine and avoid possible irritation and acne. Empowerment begins with knowing your skin type.

Normal Skin

If your skin is naturally moisturized and has a smooth surface, then you are blessed: you have normal skin! Your skin tolerates all environmental conditions very well and requires minimal skin care. Simply wash and moisturize as needed.

Oily Skin

Does your skin frequently feel greasy? Do you often have black and white heads, blemishes, or acne? Then you may have oily skin. Don't worry, it's not the end of the world. With a little tender love and care, your skin problems can be healed. To treat your skin, wash your face 1-2 times daily, and use a facial cream containing niacinamide (vitamin B3) or grapeseed oil.

Dry Skin

If your skin is often chapped or ashy, especially in cold weather, you have dry skin. This means that your skin lacks oily secretions and moisture. As always, we've got you: apply moisturizers and creams that are specifically made for dry skin meaning that they contain a higher percentage of oils or butters.

Combination Skin

You may have noticed that your skin is oily in your T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) while dry in the C-Zone (cheeks and the side of the face). This is what is meant by combination skin. Make sure to treat each zone according to its type.

Sensitive Skin

Last but not least, does your skin have an uneven texture? Is it reddish? Does it have a poor tolerance to fragrances, dyes, soaps, extreme weather, and/or temperature changes? Then you have sensitive skin! Make sure that your products are natural and have little to no fragrance.

How to know my Skin Type?

At this point, you may not know your skin type. The following steps will help you in determining this:

1) Wash your face at night, making sure not to apply anything to it
2) Touch your face the next morning
3) Observe your T and C-zones. Are they oily? Reddish? Dry? Unaffected? Are they a combination of dry and oily? You'll know your skin type based on the texture of your skin first thing in the morning.
4) If you are still unsure, take our Skin Type quiz

5) Now that you know your skin type, you may begin a skin care routine that works for you!

The good news is that you have the power to change your skin. Your age, eating habits, stress level, climate, and sun exposure all affect your skin.

Knowing your skin type will help you on your beauty journey by making you radiant and confident!
