What is a Body Scrub?
A body scrub is a physical exfoliant that removes dead skin cells using ingredients like salt or sugar in oil.
Why Should I use a Scrub?
Our skin cells go through a process of turnover where dead skin cells rise to the surface of the skin and naturally shed, revealing the softer skin below. As we age, this process slows down resulting in a buildup of dead cells on the skin's surface. This leads to rough, dry, and itchy skin.
Body scrubs stimulate skin cell turnover, removing dead skin cells, and promoting healthy production of new ones. They allow for brighter, smoother and healthier skin. Body scrubs also free in-grown hairs and may also prevent future acne breakouts.
Salt vs. Sugar Scrub
Sugar scrubs contain glycolic acid which breaks down layers of dead skin while softening it. They are gentler and less abrasive than salt scrubs. Salt scrubs are recommended for treating feet or elbows as they contain grainy particles that are useful in smoothing these rough areas.
How to Use a Scrub
- Rinse hands with warm water
- Apply a small amount of the body scrub in your hand and rub in small, circular motions
- Scrub for 30 seconds, then rinse
- Apply a moisturizer e.g. body butter, lotion after using your scrub
How Often Should I use a Scrub?
Not more than twice a week. Using too much can dry and irritate your skin. For sensitive skin types, it is recommended to use it once a week.
Who Should NOT use a Scrub?
If you have any of the following conditions, it is recommended to not use a scrub:
- Severe acne
- Skin infection and/or open wounds
